breakfast at grandma’s..

i have no idea how many of you folks know what chile verde is, but i am sure that just about everyone out there knows what breakfast at grandmas means. for some reason, breakfast at grandma’s house is so good that the day could end there and everything would be fine. i lost my grandma over christmas this year. this is a photo of the last breakfast i had with her. we had just sat down for breakfast, and i snapped a photo. my grandpa looked at me, went to say something, then just shook his head. while i know that my grandma is gone, i suppose it doesn’t feel like she’s gone, as i spent a good deal of my teen years learning how to cook like her. i figure if i can cook like my family, then they will still live on long after we are all gone. although i can’t cook as well as my grandma yet, by the time i have grandkids running around looking for some grade a menudo and tamales, i should have my game on. i miss my grandma.. alot.. but i am really glad she left something with us that we can continue to pass on.

So can you give us a run-down of everything that is on that plate? How about starting at high noon and moving clockwise?

oh!
here we go…
let’s use the jalapeno as a point of reference…
1. first up is chile verde on top of scrambled eggs.
2. next is sausages, which my grandpa calls “those damn little weenies..”
3. next, fried potatoes.. with chile verde on top..
chile verde is cooked up green chile and pork..

Is the jalapeņo just for garnish? I cannot imagine eating something that hot for breakfast. Looks good. Sorry to hear about your grandma Sergio.

Serg, that looks awesome! At my Grama’s
it will always be about her refried beans!
To this day when I go to visit I can smell
the jack cheese melting on those beans
miles before I get to the front door. No
one will ever make them like her! I’m so
sorry for your loss - I think I’ll miss
your Grama’s smile the most…
love your cuz, Allie Baby

Sergio-
I lost my grandma 2 years ago, and we were very close. Remember going to her house with me and Michael for pictures? Any how, I try to keep her spirit alive with food as well, although chili verde isn’t on our menu! You’ll have to cook it up sometime for us. I wish I still had a grandma, and my heart goes out to you right now.My grandma always said “This too shall pass”. Hhmm, I wonder…

yes, i remember your grandma!
i remember tromping around in her back yard, and taking a close up of her garden gnome..
i wonder if she knows my grandma now?

Hey Sergio. Sorry to hear about your loss. I lost my grandmother when I was in college and way too caught up in sorority parties to have picked up cooking tips from her. But, next in line is my mom and I have made certain to learn from her…tamales, menudo, Mexican rice…just have not tried the chile verde…share your recipe?
Much love, CAT

My heartfelt sympathy goes out to you and your family.
I lost a grandma 6 years ago and the other just celebrated her
93rd birthday, they passed down lots of recipes, mostly their head to mine, so we may be in trouble eventually! LOL
I am glad you get to go spend some time with your grandpa soon!
Your grandma is beautiful! My granda that passed liked hot stuff to, maybe they are having some brunch!
Hugs
